Ask for a written list rather than a verbal assurance that it &#8220;looks fine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The short list that matters most on a long trip is the same one that AAA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publish every summer: tires, battery, brakes, fluids, belts and hoses, and the air conditioning. Start with the tires. Check the pressure when they are cold, before the first drive of the day, using the number on the placard in the driver&#8217;s door jamb and not the maximum printed on the sidewall, and check the spare as well. Underinflation is the leading cause of tire failure, and NHTSA recommends replacing a tire when the tread reaches 2\/32 of an inch.<\/p>\n<p>One honest question belongs on the list before any packing. If the car already burns oil, ticks, or has a repair history you cannot trace, decide whether this engine deserves the trip. Some owners solve that at home, during a quiet week, by swapping in a low-mileage used engine instead of gambling on the old one; an online seller such as<a href=\"https:\/\/texasjdmmotors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> texasjdmmotors.com<\/a> in Dallas lists import engines by make, model, and year range, so you can see in a few minutes whether your Civic or Corolla has a match.<\/p>\n<p>The battery deserves a test, not a glance. A few things are worth doing before you leave.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Have the coolant tested and flushed if it is overdue. Old coolant loses its corrosion protection and can eat away at the radiator from the inside.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses when the engine is cold. They should feel firm, not mushy or brittle.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Replace the thermostat and radiator cap if no one has ever done so. Both are cheap and both fail quietly.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Check that the electric fan runs when the engine warms up, and that the A\/C condenser in front of the radiator is not choked with bugs and road debris.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">If the car has a timing belt and the service history is vague, treat its replacement as overdue. A belt that lets go on the highway can ruin the engine on some designs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Out on the road, learn the car&#8217;s normal temperature reading in the first hundred miles, so you can spot any change immediately. If the gauge climbs on a long grade, AAA&#8217;s advice is to turn off the air conditioning and switch the heater on to move heat away from the engine, then pull over when it is safe. Once stopped, shut the engine off and let it cool before touching anything under the hood; opening a hot radiator cap can scald you. Add a printed list of your car&#8217;s fluid types and capacities, because a stranger at a parts counter will ask.<\/p>\n<p>The other half of the kit is paperwork: your insurance card, proof of your roadside-assistance membership, and a screenshot of your plan&#8217;s towing limit. Basic plans often cover towing for only a short distance. Ask any shop to put the diagnosis and the quote in writing, ask how long the parts will take to arrive, and ask what warranty it gives on labor.<\/p>\n<p>Many people in this position discover that installing a used engine imported from Japan is a common option for cars this age. Low-mileage engines pulled from vehicles in Japan are sold in the United States for popular models, and the online sellers who ship them by freight list them by make, model, and year range. Do the research on your phone or laptop from the motel, ask the installing shop whether it will install a customer-supplied engine, and read the seller&#8217;s warranty terms first, because some require a professional installation to keep the coverage valid.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you decide, a short sequence of steps keeps things moving: get a written diagnosis, price the tow, price the repair, price the replacement, and compare those costs against what the car is worth to you. A desire to save the road trip is not a reason to throw $4,000 at a $3,500 car, but a clean title on a vehicle you love is a reason to think twice before you scrap it. Remember that a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Car_rental\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rental car<\/a> or a one-way flight home is also a legitimate answer.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Drive_the_trip_not_the_schedule\"><\/span>Drive the trip, not the schedule<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Older cars like steady speeds, shorter days, and early starts. Plan to be off the highway by mid-afternoon in summer, when the engine bay is hottest and tired drivers make poor decisions. Stop every two hours, look under the car for drips, check the oil at least once a day, and listen. A new sound is information, and the cheapest repair is the one you make in a parking lot while the car is still running.
